On the dinner table we were discussing that our helper who has come from punjab and stays with us in Singapore alone, will be celebrating karva chauth… our 7 year old son, curious as he always is, asked what karva chauth is… and my wife… hard core feminist as she is, replied curtly it’s a stupid festival and didn’t say anymore… the so called sanskari dad I want to be, I explained that it was a north Indian festival where the wife fasts from sunrise to sunset for long life of her husband… and surprisingly… without waiting for a second my son asked…
‘And what does the husband do?’…
My wife grinned in elation… but both of us felt that satisfaction somewhere deep down on the way he thinks!
There is another instance where our cook in India was going to be on leave for a couple of days… when we were discussing at the lunch table about arrangements, he simply intervened as a matter of fact that what was there to discuss… we will order from out… he did not expect or assume that my wife /his mom will have to cook…
