“I got pregnant when I was barely an adult and then went on to have another 3 more babies… This is for him and her who believed in me and gave me the chance to do whatever I do today”… I overheard a lady talking at a different table…
The group had already downed many bottles of wine by then… But she went ahead and bought this last bottle of wine for them on herself, just out of the blue at the end… and gave it to the older man and woman in their group… And she spoke her heart…
It was touching… Ya, granted she probably had had a few glasses of wine by then… But that only meant that she was speaking from her heart with no filters… It was not just a nice little gesture… But a naked expression of heartfelt emotions… Of pure gratitude…
She didn’t have to do what she did… I don’t think it was going to get her anything… From the looks of it, no one was expecting it…
But, in that minute, that few moments.. just with 1 sentence and a small gesture, she conveyed (or so I feel) so much about her life, her struggles, the lows she must have felt and how strongly she felt grateful for the people who had believed in her…
Whilst I didn’t react at that moment, when I was going back home way late in the night… In the cab, I kept thinking about her and felt so happy having eavesdropped into that moment and knowing people like her exist…
There is a Sanskrit quote I had heard in my youth… Krutagyna hin na paschyate… for the one who has no gratitude, there is no penance or repentance… Every sin has a penance and repentance but not lack of gratitude..
And I have generally found people who are grateful very endearing… They are humble… Not full of themselves… Know how lucky they have been… Are grounded… Conduct themselves with integrity and loyalty… They have a value system that is socially amiable…
Guess its because when people count their blessings and express them, the realisation of ones individual limitations registers unconciously… and the feeling of gratitude is also an expression of our inherent nature of having to depend on someone to achieve whatever we have or can or just even survive…
Reminding ourselves of what we are grateful for, makes us positive by bringing forth things we cherish or have cherished… That’s what Jainee aims for, when she makes all of us as family say what we are grateful for in that day every night before we sleep… without fail… Even if we cannot think of anything special that day… just being able to eat or sleep or live… Even if its the smallest of things we have to be thankful for…
But anyways… This is not about the greatness of gratitude… But the sharing of a moment that was so small, delicate, temporal and quick… But was so touching and indicative of that person’s gifted nature…
I feel delighted reminiscing about it… And could not help but share it out… Truly something at Christmas that says, guys this is… Joy to the world 🙂
