The framework below is not a claim of absolute truth. It is simply the most coherent model I currently have for understanding life, consciousness, meaning, ethics, and action.
# Axiom 1: Experiential Primacy
All reality accessible to me is mediated through conscious experience.
Whatever exists objectively, my access to it comes only through experience.
I do not directly experience reality itself. I experience my perceptions, thoughts, emotions, sensations, memories, and interpretations of reality.
This does not mean objective reality does not exist.
It simply means that experience is the only doorway through which I know it.
# Axiom 2: Consciousness as Faculty
Consciousness is a faculty of mind that enables subjective experience.
Based on the best available evidence, consciousness appears dependent upon biological conditions and processes.
When those conditions irreversibly cease, consciousness ceases.
I do not currently find sufficient reason to believe that consciousness survives death, exists independently of biology, or continues eternally as an individual self.
I remain open to evidence, but I do not assume immortality.
# Axiom 3: No Permanent Self
The “self” is not an entity.
The “self” is not a soul.
The “self” is not a permanent substance.
Rather, what I call “I” is a continuously evolving stream of conscious experience.
The river remains recognizable despite never containing the same water.
Likewise, the person remains recognizable despite constantly changing experiences, beliefs, memories, desires, and identities.
Personal identity is continuity of conciousness, not permanence.
# Axiom 4: Vivek as the Governing Principle
Vivek, or discernment, is the most important human faculty.
Vivek is the ability to:
– perceive clearly,
– question assumptions,
– recognize self-deception,
– evaluate consequences,
– understand desires,
– navigate uncertainty,
– choose intentionally rather than reactively.
Life is not determined solely by circumstances.
It is determined largely by the clarity with which circumstances are interpreted and acted upon.
A stronger vivek does not guarantee correct answers.
It improves the quality of choice for the chooser.
# Axiom 5: Desire is Neutral Energy
Desire is not inherently good or bad.
Desire is simply directional energy. Desire is the fundamental driver of experiences.
It is the force that moves conscious beings toward experiences, outcomes, goals, relationships, achievements, pleasures, meanings, and aspirations.
Many traditions treat desire as a problem.
I do not.
The problem is not desire itself.
The problem is unconscious, confused, contradictory, poorly understood, or uncontrolled desire.
Desire provides direction.
Vivek provides navigation.
# Axiom 6: Ethics are Emergent
Ethics do not descend from the heavens.
Ethics emerge from interdependence.
Human beings do not exist in isolation. Sustainable experience requires communal sustainability.
Every action affects networks of conscious beings.
Trust, reciprocity, cooperation, fairness, and social stability emerge because conscious beings interact with one another.
Ethics are therefore not arbitrary.
Yet they are also not absolute cosmic laws.
They emerge from the realities of coexistence.
# Axiom 7: Epistemic Pluralism
No single source has a monopoly on truth.
Science, philosophy, psychology, introspection, meditation, observation, history, and lived experience are all useful tools.
Every tool that strengthens vivek – discernment should be considered.
Every claim should remain open to examination.
No authority should become immune from inquiry.
# The Central Role of Vivek
If there is one idea at the center of this philosophy, it is this:
In human affairs, no authority can ultimately replace discernment.
Not religion.
Not scripture.
Not gurus.
Not ideology.
Not tradition.
Not society.
Not even science.
All of these can inform judgment.
None can replace it.
Even surrender is a choice.
Even faith is a choice.
Even choosing not to choose is a choice.
Every belief ultimately passes through human discernment.
This is why I place vivek above authority.
Not because authority has no value.
But because authority itself must first be evaluated.
# Dharma, Morality, and Human Conflict
One of the questions that led me here was:
> Is there an objective hierarchy of dharma or roles/duty?
I currently do not think so.
Life presents competing values:
– loyalty versus truth,
– justice versus compassion,
– freedom versus stability,
– family versus society,
– personal happiness versus responsibility.
These conflicts often involve genuine values on both sides.
The challenge is not choosing between good and evil.
The challenge is choosing between multiple competing goods.
For this reason, I do not believe a universal hierarchy exists that resolves all human dilemmas.
Human life requires discernment precisely because values conflict.
# Meaning and Purpose
If there is no eternal self and no guaranteed cosmic purpose, does life become meaningless?
I do not think so.
Meaning is not discovered.
Meaning is created.
Purpose arises from chosen desires, experiences, relationships, projects, contributions, explorations, and commitments.
Life’s value lies not in eternal duration but in conscious experience.
A meaningful life is one where experiences are chosen with increasing clarity and lived with increasing awareness.
# Growth
Growth, in this philosophy, is ability to experience and pursue experiences which are desired. To this end it requires strengthening of vivek.
Growth means becoming:
– less self-deceived,
– less reactive,
– more aware,
– more emotionally resilient,
– more capable of acting intentionally,
– more willing to examine one’s own beliefs,
– more accepting of consequences.
Meditation can aid this.
Reading can aid this.
Psychology can aid this.
Science can aid this.
Failure can aid this.
Anything that improves discernment contributes to growth.
# What I Do Not Claim
I do not claim:
– absolute truth,
– final answers,
– universal morality,
– perfect objectivity,
– certainty.
I believe in multiplicity of views but I do not claim that all viewpoints are equally valid.
Rather, I believe human beings must continually exercise discernment in a world where certainty is rarely available and values often conflict.
The absence of absolute answers does not remove responsibility.
It increases it.
# A Final Summary
If I had to summarize this entire philosophy in a few sentences:
> Conscious experience is the foundation of all accessible reality. And concious experience is life.
> The self is a continuous stream rather than a permanent entity.
> Desire provides the drive.
> Vivek provides discernment and navigation.
> Ethics emerge from interdependence as sustained experience requires sustained communal living.
> No authority can ultimately replace personal judgment.
> Human life consists of navigating competing values through increasingly refined discernment while taking responsibility for the consequences of one’s choices.
This is not a finished philosophy.
It is simply where my thinking stands today. And like everything else, it remains open to revision through further experience, reflection, and inquiry.
